Welcome

These Guidelines are for developers, planners, engineers, technical consultants and contractors involved in subdivision design and construction in the Northern Territory. They apply to urban areas, rural areas, towns and remote communities.

The Guidelines have been prepared by the Northern Territory Government Department of Infrastructure Planning and Logistics and first released in August 2020, following wide engagement with developers, Local Government Councils, asset owners, service authorities, design consultants, NT Government agencies and contractors.

They provide information on the minimum standards required by Local Governments, NT Government service authorities and the Power and Water Corporation in granting clearance of the conditions imposed on a subdivision by the Northern Territory Development Consent Authority (DCA). The DCA is the subdivision approval authority in the Northern Territory under the Planning Act 1999 (NT).

The Guidelines provide best practice engineering design and construction standards for important community infrastructure such as roads and pathways, stormwater drainage, parks and landscaping.

The Guidelines encompass current legislation and best practice minimum engineering standards. They are intended to guide Local Government, asset owners and the development industry through planning, design, construction and handover phases.

Local authorities are encouraged to formally adopt these Guidelines as the basis for subdivisional engineering approval.
