History/Origin Named in 1965 after Captain Barneson who was in command of the ship Moonta which was chartered to take Surveyor General Goyder and party to Port Darwin. The Moonta arrived at Port Darwin on 5 February 1869 and remained whilst the Town of Palmerston (now Darwin) was surveyed.
The road name was revoked in 2018 when a new entry road into the Darwin CBD was constructed over this area. The commemorative name 'Barneson' was placed on a reserve list for future use upon revocation that occurred when the name Garramilla Boulevard was registered in 2018.
The new and iconic road provided significant opportunity to honour Darwin?s rich Larrakia heritage. Following extensive engagement with Larrakia organisations and the City of Darwin, the name ?Garramilla Boulevard? was identified as the preferred name for this new entry. The word ?Garramilla? has a special significance for Larrakia people as it refers to the white stone of the cliff faces around Darwin Harbour.
The commemorative name 'Barneson' has been used since with the naming of Barneson Street in Durack, Palmerston in 2024.
