History/Origin Named after John Leo Artaud (1872-1953) who as a Mounted Constable 2nd Class joined the NT Police Force in early 1904 , having previously served in Adelaide and Mount Gambier in South Australia.

He served in the Timber Creek Police District where he was stationed during Governor Le Hunte's visit to the NT in 1905. He remained at Timber Creek until 1908 and then served in old Palmerston in 1909 and Brocks Creek in 1910. He returned to South Australia in August 1920 due to ill health and left the force in 1911.

He went on to join the AIF in WWI in October 1915, returning to Australia in July 1919.
