History/Origin Named by Capt Francis Cadell on 6 June 1867, during his exploration of coastal rivers of the Northern Territory to determine the site for a capital.

Cadell in his report published as South Australian Parliamentary Paper No. 24 of 1868/9 "Exploration Northern Territory" writes
"Thursday, June 6 - .... The width of this affluent to the Liverpool, which I have named the Tomkinson, was at this point eighty yards, with a depth of five fathoms at low water, midchannel, on a bottom muddy and soft as that of the main stream."

Cadell probably named this river after Samuel Tomkinson (1816-1900) a prominent businessman and banker of Adelaide, South Australia
