History/Origin | In August 1618, Dutch Mariner Jacobszoon marked the point on the entrance to what was later called Port Essington, on the Dutch charts as Kape Schildpad (Cape Turtle). On 23 April 1818, P. P. King named the port Port Essington after Sir William Essington, a naval officer and later Admiral in 1810. Essington was in command of Triumph at the battle of Camperdown in October 1797. |
