| History/Origin | Discover by J C Wickham and believed to be named by John L Stokes on 9 October 1839 whilst sailing between Port Darwin, Bynoe Harbour and Victoria River. Stokes does not mention the name in his journal, however "C. Charles" is shown on the Map inside the rear cover of his journal. The features is believed to be named after Charles Darwin, a former colleague of Wickham and Stokes aboard "HMS Beagle" Goyder in 1869 and 1885 has the feature named "Pt Charles" on his plans of Port Darwin and the Northern Territory. An index plan of the Northern Territory of 1910 has the feature named "Pt Charles". CC Boulter's survey of the lighthouse and surrounding area (Data Plans 259 and 260) has the feature still named Pt Charles, however the Admiralty Chart 613 - "Melville Is with Dundas and Clarence Straits", published 1883, Edition 1913 has the feature named "Charles Point". The 1920 edition of Admiralty Chart 475 - "North West Coast of Australia, 1883" - continues the name "Charles Pt", which has continued to today. |
