History/Origin Formerly known as Pigeon Hole, in 2024 the community name changed to its Bilinarra language name - Nitjpurru - at the request of the Traditional Owners.

Nitjpurru is the traditional name for the billabong just north of where the community is situated.

The previous name Pigeon Hole initially described the former outstation on the Victoria River Downs pastoral lease that surrounds the present community.
