History/Origin | Narliba was a healing man and was known throughout the area at the time, as far as Adelaide River. He first came to Darwin at about 1960, with a group of people for medical treatment at the then East Arm Hospital sited at Berrimah. Narliba went about finding a more stable area for his people to camp, as they were nearing or completing their treatment at the East Arm Hospital. He negotiated with Aboriginal Development Foundation to set up permanent campsite. Eventually the Aboriginal Development Foundation gained a Special Purposes Lease over the site that is known as the "Palmerston Indigenous Village". Narliba was a group leader and one of the early residents who set up the original campsite in Palmerston Indigenous Village area and became a respected elder providing support for many Aboriginal people. |
