History/Origin | The mining town arose out of discoveries of Uranium at Kakadu in 1970 and the "Jabiru" airstrip to service the mining camp. The Fox Royal Commission provided for the mining town to be established in connection with the Ranger Uranium deposit. The name was derived from that bird that frequents the billabongs of the coastal plains of Kakadu. |
