History/Origin | The Town of Yulara was declared under the Crown Lands Ordinance in 1976 and gazetted in NTG 34 of 20/8/1976. Following the Northern Territory Administration decision to establish a new town near Ayers Rock in 1975 to service the tourist industry associated with Ayers Rock and The Olgas, the Place Names Committee in consultation with the Ayers Rock Advisory Committee and local aboriginals recommended the new town site be called YULARA - after the aboriginal word for "howling dingo" and the associated "Dingo dreaming". The NT Government transferred the majority of the land, roads and buildings within the Town boundary to Ayers Rock Resort Nominees Pty Ltd in August 1992 (NTG 34 of 26/8/1992). |
