History/Origin | The Sandover locality derives its name from the river of the same name which in turn is believed to have been named by Charles Winnecke after William Sandover, President of the South Australian Legislative Council in 1878. William Sandover (-1909), Politican, was born in Devonshire, England and came to South Australia in 1849. As a Member of Parliament (SA), he held the seat of Gumeracha from April 1868 to 1870 and was a Member and President of the SA Legislative Council from 1873 to 1883. He also had an interest in the Stuart Hotel, Adelaide. The Sandover Stock Route and Highway have been named as they follow the Sandover River. |
