| History/Origin |
The Mataranka locality takes its name from the town of the same name. Believed to be of Maori origin the name 'Mataranka' was applied by Dr J A Gilruth about 1914-15 when establishing an Experimental Sheep Farm near the thermal springs area. When the rail line was extended to the present Town area in 1928, the Town of Mataranka was officially gazetted. |
