| History/Origin | The Daly Waters locality derives its name from the Town of Daly Waters which in turn was named after the adjoining stream feature which in turn was named by John McDouall Stuart on 23 May 1862, during his third and successful attempt to cross the Continent from south to north. Daly Waters is named after Sir Dominick Daly who was the Governor of South Australia at the time. The town grew around the Daly Waters Depot established during the construction of the Overland telegraph Line in 1870, which later became the Telegraph Station (early 1872). In 1927, following the extension of the railway line to Birdum (near Larrimah), a townsite was laid out at Daly Waters and some blocks occupied to service the adjacent airport established in pre-war years. |
