| History/Origin | This County, in the Roper River area, lapsed with the passage in 1976 and subsequent assent of the Crown Lands Ordinance 1976 (No 1 of 1977) and the Crown Lands (Validantion of Proclaimations) Ordinance 1976 (No 2 of 1977). County was named after William Ewart Gladstone (1809 ? 1898), born in Liverpool, educated at Eton and Oxford and became an MP in 1832 and finally Prime Minister of a Liberal Government in 1867, but was defeated by Benjamin Disraeli in 1874. Gladstone had four terms as Prime Minister in 1867, 1880, 1886 & 1892. Four of the Hundreds of the County of Gladstone bear references to places connected with his family homes at Hawarden and Fasque (in Scotland) and with Stephen Glynne and Flintshire. |
