As a Member of Parliament (SA), he held the seat of Gumeracha from April 1868 to 1870 and was a Member and President of the SA Legislative Council from 1873 to 1883. He also had an interest in the Stuart Hotel, Adelaide.

The Sandover Stock Route and Highway have been named as they follow the Sandover River.
