| History/Origin | Named in the 1930s after a name given to an aboriginal tribal group which lived in the area. The LANDS Pastoral index series 1/800 and 3/800 do not show any name for the River feature. The Daly River Aboriginal Reserve was declared over 3000 sq Miles in 1923, north of Bradshaw Station and a Catholic Mission established at Daly River and Port Keats in the mid 1930s. Tindale in "Aboriginal Tribes of Australia", 1974 writes:- "Maringar ..Moil (not a tribal name = "plain" or "plain country"), Moyle (name as given to river by Europeans)." |
