History/Origin | This feature was originally name Mount Olga by Ernest Giles on 21 October 1872 whilst travelling along the northern shore of Lake Amadeus. Giles named the two features in honour of the two enlightened patrons of science, referring to King Amadeus of Spain and Queen Olga of Württemberg. On 15 December 1993 the feature was officially recorded dual names Mount Olga / Kata Tjuta (were both are equally important and can be used either together or individually). Following a request from the regional Tourism Association, on 6 November 2002, the order of the dual names were officially changed to Kata Tjuta / Mount Olga. The names Kartuta and Cutta Toota are recorded on early plans of Central Australia with the name Kata Tjuta consisting of two words Kata (head) and Tjula (many) being literally "many heads". |
