History/Origin | Mount McGowan was named by Charles Todd in 1872 during the survey of Section A of the Overland Telegraph Line, after Samuel Walker McGowan. Richard R Knuckey in his report to Todd on Section A, dated 2 December 1872 states on page 6 wrote ....... at 19 miles from Charlotte Waters, the line crosses the MacGowan Ranges and to a range of hills running ENE; very stoney. Mt Daniel named by Stuart and MacGowan named by Mr Todd being the two most conspicuous points in the range. ....... McGowan, a scientist, was born in Ireland, educated in Canada and who came to Victoria to head a Company to provide telegraphic linkage between Melbourne and neighbouring State capitals in 1853. McGowan went overseas to investigate telegraphy in later years, but his contribution to telegraphy was recognised by Sir Charles Todd in naming this peak after the scientist. |
