History/Origin |
PP King named the peninsula on 1 May 1818. to honour "His Royal Highness, Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg." He was an uncle of Queen Victoria. King's spelling of 'Cobourg' has been kept for the peninsula name in the NT because of the number of maps using this form rather than 'Saxe-Coburg' - the German form as used in the Melbourne suburb of Coburg. |
