Title:Vegetation Landcover Mapping for the Greater Darwin Region
Citation Date:2003-10-21
Date Type:publication
Custodian:Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security
Description
The spatial dataset was compiled at a scale of 1:100,000 and describes the major vegetation communities throughout both the Litchfield and Coomalie shires and extending into Cox Peninsula (ie Greater Darwin Region). The land cover mapping was derived from an early dry season image to show wetlands at their maximum extent and avoid recent fire-scars. The land cover mapping was also compared with a forest cover surface, existing vegetation and land unit maps of the same area and maps of the distribution of wetlands and rainforests. These comparisons provide further support as to the utility of a satellite derived land cover map that primarily reflects vegetation communities for a region in the monsoonal tropics of northern Australia.

Data Quality
Lineage:All spatial datasets used for the landcover mapping project are described on page 5 (5.3 Ancillary Spatial Data) in the accompanying report.
The land cover mapping was derived from a Landsat 7 satellite image acquired on April 10, 2001.
Positional Accuracy:The accuracy of the mapping was measured from 2723 field sites with associated plant species lists or data on dominant tree species. Overall mapping accuracy was 83% with producer and user accuracies
for individual classes ranging between 55% and 100%. Field data was also used to define a plant species list for each class, including a list of indicator species. Indicator species were those plant species occurring in at least 30% of sites within the class, while being at least 1.5 times more common in the class than in any other.
Attribute Accuracy:A single attribute, COMMUNITY, is used to describe the 16 major vegetation community classifications.
Logical Consistency:GIS editing tools were used to rectify all overshoots and undershoots in line work. Polygon topology rules applied are; must not overlap, must not have gaps and each polygon has only one label.
