Description

Abstract:

WRM Water & Environment Pty Ltd (WRM) was engaged by the NT Department of Land Planning and Environment (DLPE) to develop hydraulic models of the Victoria River and Wattie Creek in the vicinity of Kalkarindji and Daguragu. The objective of this study is to provide flood mapping for the township of Kalkarindji and the settlement of Daguragu for the 1% Annual Exceedance Probability (AEP) design flood and Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) events.
The design discharges for this study were estimated based on a flood frequency analysis of the Victoria River discharges at Kalkarindji. A TUFLOW fully two dimensional hydraulic model was developed to estimate design flood levels in the vicinity of Kalkarindji and Daguragu. The TUFLOW model was calibrated to the February 2001 flood event in Kalkarindji.

Data Quality

Lineage:The TUFLOW hydrodynamic model (WBM, 2010) was used to simulate the flood behaviour of the Victoria River and Wattie Creek channels and their floodplains in the vicinity of Kalkarindji and Daguragu, respectively. TUFLOW represents hydraulic conditions on a fixed grid by solving the full two-dimensional depth averaged momentum and continuity equations for free surface flow. The model automatically calculates breakout points and flow directions within the study area.
The TUFLOW model was calibrated against recorded peak water level at the Wave Hill stream gauge and surveyed peak flood levels around the Kalkarindji Township for the February 2001 flood event.
TUFLOW model calibration was undertaken by applying the recorded hydrograph at the Wave Hill stream gauge at the upstream boundary of the model and adjusting the peak flow to reproduce the recorded hydrograph at the Wave Hill gauging station. The calibrated TUFLOW model was then used to predict design event flood levels, depths, extents, velocities and high hazard areas for the design discharges.

Positional Accuracy:Good - Derived from topographic base map and NT cadastre. The summation of errors from all sources results in data with a standard deviation defined by scale used as +/-25m for well-defined points

Attribute Accuracy:

Logical Consistency:GIS editing tools were used to rectify all overshoots and undershoots in line work. Polygon data topology rules applied are must not overlap, must not have gaps and each polygon has only one label. Attributes are consistent with other related layers

Completeness:Complete
