Description

Abstract:

This low/medium resolution vegetation survey (scale 1:100,000) and accompanying polygon spatial dataset provides information about the vegetation communities of the McArthur River catchment, an area of approximately 25,800 km2 in the Northern Territory. This information is intended to support conservation and development planning processes and land management in the catchment by a range of end-users.

Data Quality

Lineage:Vegetation map units were derived from the numerical classification of >800 floristic sites collected from the McArthur River catchment in association with historical and current vegetation, biodiversity and land resource surveys. Continuous cover data in each vegetation strata were employed to derive a floristic classification of all sites within the study area and subsequently manually interpreted to derive consistent vegetation map unit boundaries at a classification scale of approximately 1:100 000. Full details can be found in the report which accompanies this spatial data.

Map unit boundaries were derived from a number of remotely sensed data sources using both statistical analysis and manual interpretation methods, including:

1. Supervised classification of Landsat 5 TM data in ENVI
2. Stereoscopic interpretation of high resolution hardcopy aerial photography;
3. On-screen interpretation of contemporary high resolution digital aerial photography;
4. Manual interpretation of LANDSAT 5 TM multi-spectral satellite imagery.

These polygons were initially attributed using the vegetation map unit classification derived via numerical analysis with subsequent evaluation and manual editing.

Polygon attribution reflects the interpretation and integration of a range of data including detailed site data, field notes, aerial photography, satellite image analysis and digital elevation models. Full details of the vegetation mapping process and the vegetation map unit descriptions can be found in Cuff, Thompson, Sparrow & Brocklehurst, 2009.

Positional Accuracy:POLYGON DATA: Initial polygon boundaries were derived automatically from satellite image classification with supplementary line-work digitised from a combination of aerial photography and satellite image interpretation.

Attribute Accuracy:Attribute values, as described in the Data Dictionary below, have been added to each polygon.

Logical Consistency:GIS editing tools were used to rectify all overshoots and undershoots in line work. Polygon topology rules applied are; must not overlap, must not have gaps and each polygon has only one label.

Completeness:Complete
