Description
VERSION 4. UPDATED AUGUST 2015
This medium resolution vegetation survey (scale 1:100,000) and accompanying polygon spatial dataset provides information about the vegetation communities over an area of approximately 52, 580 km2 in the Daly River catchment area, located approximately 200km south of Darwin in the Northern Territory.
The spatial data is a compilation of new and historical vegetation mapping boundaries, and in some instances vegetation community attributes, derived from a variety of sources and methodologies including aerial photograph interpretation, LANDSAT satellite imagery analyses and numerical classification of vegetation site data collected during historical and current vegetation, biodiversity and land resource surveys within the Daly River Catchment. It is however, a new dataset and should be treated as such.
The mapping was undertaken to assist in the protection of biodiversity values and planning of sustainable development and land management within the Daly River catchment. The boundary extents of the project is defined by the Daly River Catchment boundary created by Faulks, J. J. (1998).
This release is Version 4.0 with ongoing maintenance and revision of the data expected. Subsequent versions will be released as required.

Data Quality
Lineage:Vegetation map units were derived from the numerical classification of >2500 full floristic sites collected from the Daly River catchment in association with historical and current vegetation, biodiversity and land resource surveys. Continuous cover data in each vegetation strata were employed to derive a floristic classification of all sites within the study area and subsequently manually interpreted to derive consistent vegetation map unit boundaries at a classification scale of approximately 1:100 000.
Line work was generated through a variety of means:
1. Refinement of existing boundaries from a variety of historical (DBSN_50, DALYA_50) and ongoing (Elizabeth Downs & Katherine/Fergusson) land resource surveys
2. Supplementary stereoscopic aerial photograph interpretation adjoining existing surveys to extend data beyond the boundaries of the existing land resource surveys.
3. Segmentation of LANDSAT 7 ETM imagery (2003) in eCognition to derive additional linework outside the boundaries of the manually interpreted line work outlined above. This involved the use of MULTI-RESOLUTION segmentation of LANDSAT bands 1 through 8 and subsequent SPECTRAL DIFFERENCE segmentation at the image-object level using the initial segmentation as the input data to produce vegetation map unit boundaries.
Positional Accuracy:POLYGON DATA; Initial polygon boundaries were derived from a combination of aerial photograph interpretation and automatic generation from LANDSAT 7 ETM satellite image classification with supplementary line-work digitised from a combination of aerial photography interpretation and satellite image interpretation on both medium resolution (LANDSAT 7 ETM) and high resolution (15m), 2006 SPOT image bases (NTLIS, 2010) of the Daly River Catchment area.
Significant review and edge matching of both linework and attributes occurred after this preliminary data development stage with manual editing of both feature types using ESRI ARCINFO Workstation. However, inherent error in the spatial position of historical linework captured digitally from the original hardcopy land resource mapping may be evident in areas where this linework has been retained.
Attribute Accuracy:Preliminary polygon attributes were assigned from the floristic classification using eCognition:
1. The CLASSIFICATION routine in eCognition was first employed to assign classes (vegetation map units) from a thematic layer to the image-objects derived from the segmentation.
2. The resultant classified image-objects were then used to derive training image-objects using the CONVERT TO SAMPLE function. This yielded sample image-objects classified with a vegetation map unit.
3. These sample image-objects were then utilised in a NEAREST NEIGHBOUR CLASSIFICATION to assign vegetation map units to the remainder of the non-classified image objects within the survey area.
4. Significant manual assessment and interpretation of photo/satellite image patterns was then undertaken with reference to the attributes assigned via the image classification process.
5. All efforts have been made to ensure a high degree of attribute accuracy, however, inherent error in the spatial location and attribution of historical site data may influence the overall accuracy of the map attributes in the current data-set. This is a major focus of the ongoing assessment and updating of the mapping with changes incorporated into subsequent versions of the data.
Attribute values, as described in the Data Dictionary below, have been added to each polygon. Additionally, a table categorising each dominant vegetation mapunit label into Vegetation Groups has been compiled to assist users with mapping display. The table is stored inside the ESRI file geodatabase.
Logical Consistency:GIS editing tools were used to rectify all overshoots and undershoots in line work. Polygon topology rules applied are; must not overlap, must not have gaps and each polygon has only one label.
Completeness:Complete.
(A minor field program was undertaken to assist the attribution of polygon data and to check line work in the field. The checking process is ongoing with the intent of updating the digital data periodically as this progresses.) Ongoing maintenance and revision of the data is expected with subsequent versions will be released as required.
