Description
The spatial data is a refinement and extension of the LEVEE_25 mapping (refer to Soil Survey and Capability Assessment of the Upper Katherine River Area for Irrigated Horticulture).
It is, however, a new dataset and should be treated as such. Land Capability Mapping in the Katherine Vicinity (NRETAS Survey ID reference: KRURA_25) contains two attributes. These are Agricultural Land Capability and Soil Drainage. The mapping was undertaken to assist planners protect agricultural land while allowing subdivision of land suitable for peri-urban living. The mapped area covers 486km2 and is predominantly 3.4km either side of the Katherine River near the Katherine township.

Data Quality
Lineage:Polygon line work was generated by refining and extending the boundaries of the existing LEVEE_25 survey. (1988) Satellite imagery and digital topographic data, combined with existing site data was interpreted to undertake the mapping. A minor field program was undertaken to describe the soil landscape of new areas but also to check polygon line work in the field.
Original map unit boundaries delineated from aerial photographs and stereoscope interpretation. Map units transferred to topographic map sheets via a mapograph. Original maps were hardcopy only. With the advent of geographic information systems polygons were digitised by rectifying the original hard copy maps.

Positional Accuracy:POLYGON DATA
Map unit boundaries transferred from aerial photographs to topographic maps, using the best available topographic mapping at the time via a mapograph. Level of accuracy depends on the number of control points on individual aerial photographs. Control points include creek lines, cadastre and other topographic features. Depending on the nature of the landscape (the number of control points), positional accuracy may vary. Positional accuracy generally considered moderate to high.
POINT DATA
Survey teams navigated during field operations with topographic maps, aerial photographs and prismatic compass's. Point source locations marked on aerial photography in the field. Positional accuracy considered within 300m but generally below 200m depending on the terrain. Site coordinates derived by transferring site locations from aerial photographs to topographic maps and coordinates calculated. In some cases sites have been georeferenced directly from aerial photography to Google Earth Web Map Server in MapInfo or ArcGIS.
Attribute Accuracy:Attributes assigned according to the dominant feature. For example, where ten sites have been grouped to describe a particular map unit and two different soils described from these sites then the dominant soil is chosen. Attribute values, as described in the Data Dictionary below, have been added to each polygon.
Logical Consistency:GIS editing tools were used to rectify all overshoots and undershoots in line work. Polygon topology rules applied are; must not overlap, must not have gaps and each polygon has only one label.

Soils are well drained, moderately deep to deep, contain very minor or no rock outcrop and are relatively stable. Slopes are generally <2%. LOW Soils exhibit severe physical constraints to irrigated cropping. Constraints may include poor drainage, abundant rock outcrop, excessive slopes, erodible and/or very shallow soils. MODERATE Soils contain physical properties capable of irrigated cropping with some limitations.
