Description
This is a medium resolution survey dataset (1:100 000), mapping vegetation communities for the Eastern and Southern portions of the Finke Bioregion in the Northern Territory and South Australia. It describes vegetation units and their attributes as floristic and environmental data and provides a basis for identifying the extent and distribution of vegetation communities.
The accompanying report describes the methods used for collection of new data, the sources of the pre-existing data, contains information on applications of the data and recommendations for future mapping and integration with related datasets.

Data Quality
Lineage:Both existing and new data were used for the project. The minimum requirement for the EXISTING DATA was to contain species name, height, cover, landform pattern and element, and an accurate location derived from a GPS. NEW FIELD DATA collection was done using variable sized virtual quadrats recording a visual estimation of percentage cover and height of all species occurring at covers greater than 5% along with cover estimates for physical substrate components. A stepwise supervised maximum likelihood classification approach was utilised to create linework on Landsat imagery based on this field data.
This draft, classified raster image of the study area was then "smoothed" using a majority filtering process (7x7 pixel moving kernel window) to remove noise and generalise the raster product before conversion to vector format.
Vectorised mapping classes derived from the image classification process were converted to ARCINFO coverage format for further evaluation and editing.
Landsystem components information for the Northern Territory portion of the project area based on Perry et al "Lands of the Alice Springs Area" (1956) has been manually attributed directly onto each mapping group.
NVIS level 6 descriptions were created for each mapping group based on height, growth form and abundance data.
Positional Accuracy:In early March 2008 two Landsat triple scenes were acquired over the study area. These were nominally Path/Row 102/77 (Acq. 21/02/08) and 101/77 (Acq. 1/03/08). Both of these images were purchased already radiometrically and geometrically corrected to ACRES Level 10 (Orthocorrected) with a spatial accuracy better than 20 meters.

Attribute Accuracy:HIGH. Accuracy of the attribute information is considered high and conforms to the "Australian Soil and Land Survey Field Handbook" at time of capture. Analysis of site data to provide community information.
Logical Consistency:GOOD. Dataset topological consistency has been checked and all classified polygons are closed, nodes are formed at the intersection of lines and there is only one label within each polygon. Polygons have been classified for mapping group ID, Perry land units (NT only) and NVIS level 6 description in the lookup table.
Completeness:Judged complete at this stage - spatial and attribute verification of the dataset has been performed. Report complete, digital cover is available for export.
