Description
This image dataset describes 2 classes of slope as a percentage across the Northern Territory.
Slope measures the inclination of the land surface from the horizontal. Per cent slope represents this inclination as the ratio of change in height to distance. Each grid in the raster dataset is 1 second x 1 second (equivalent to 30m x 30m).
- Class 2: Greater than 2 percent slope. This class is displayed on NR Maps in a red opaque colour.
- Class 1: Less than or equal to 2 percent slope. This class is not displayed on NR Maps but is equivalent to the absence areas of class 2.
The dataset was reclassified from the original dataset, Slope Derived from 1 second SRTM DEM-S version 1.0 and sourced via Commonwealth of Australia (CSIRO).
A smoothed digital elevation model (DEM-S) is based on the bare-earth DEM that has been adaptively smoothed to reduce random noise typically associated with the SRTM data in low relief areas.
The DEM-S data was derived from the 1 second Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) data acquired by NASA in February 2000 and publicly released under Creative Commons licensing from November 2011.

The grid image was modified by this Department in October 2018. The data was clipped to the Northern Territory and reclassified to 2 classes using ESRI ArcGIS software.
Source data:
1 second SRTM-derived Smoothed Digital Elevation Model (DEM-S; ANZCW0703014016).
Source calculation:
Percent slope was calculated from DEM-S using the finite difference method (Gallant and Wilson, 2000). The different spacing in the E-W and N-S directions due to the geographic projection of the data was accounted for by using the actual spacing in metres of the grid points calculated from the latitude.
The slope calculation was performed on 1 second x 1 second tiles, with overlaps to ensure correct values at tile edges.
Positional Accuracy:Sourced from original Metadata. The horizontal positional error is the same as for the raw SRTM 1 second data, with 90% of tested locations within 7.2 m for Australia. See Rodriguez et al. (2006) for more information.
Attribute Accuracy:Sourced from original Metadata. Accuracy of the slope product has not been assessed. The smoothed DEM-S has been designed to be suitable for deriving landform attributes such as slope. See the DEM-S metadata for further information.
Logical Consistency:Sourced from original Metadata. This product is a consistent representation of terrain slope based on the information in DEM-S.
Completeness:Sourced from original Metadata. The slope product covers the same area as the source DEM-S, which is virtually all of continental Australia and near coastal islands. Some tiles containing of mainland or pieces of islands were not supplied at 1 second resolution and are therefore missing, see DEM-S metadata for details.
