Description

Abstract:

This polyline spatial dataset displays Stream Order over the Northern Territory using the Strahler hierarchical classification from the source (Stream Order 1) then downstream to the largest stream (Stream Order 7). A waterway with no tributaries is a first-order stream. Two first-order streams join to form a second-order stream and two second-order streams join to form a third-order stream and so on.

The Stream Network line segments describe where water would flow according to a hydrological enforced 9 second digital elevation model at scale 1:250,000.
The data was sourced from the Australian surface water hydrography geofabric data supplied by Commonwealth of Australia (Bureau of Meteorology).
The Stream Order information were sourced from Commonwealth of Australia (Geoscience Australia) using a lookup table that was joined to the stream network.

Data Quality

Lineage:Original data source 1: Geofabric V2.1.1 SH_Network.GDB - Feature class AHGFNetworkStream
Original data source 2: National Environmental Stream Attributes - Terrain look up table

- The Australian network stream dataset was clipped to an extent approximately 75km beyond the Northern Territory border.
- The Terrain look up table was joined to the Stream Network dataset using the field SEGMENTNO.
- This table also contains the field STRAHLER. The integers 1 to 7 are allocated to each segment number.
- The output feature class NT_STREAM_ORDER has a smaller set of attributes to reduce the file size. (see Data Dictionary)

Positional Accuracy:The Stream Network line segments describe where water would flow according to a hydrological enforced 9 second digital elevation model at scale 1:250,000.

Attribute Accuracy:The complete set of attributes were not stored in the output dataset.
The truncated set of attributes was intended to reduce the file size and are described in the Data Dictionary.

Fields kept from the Stream Network dataset: Name, Hierarchy, Perennial, Segment No, SrcFType.
Field kept from the Terrain look up table: Segment No, Strahler

Logical Consistency:Refer to original datasets. (details in Supplementary Information)

AttributeAttribute DescriptionPossible CodeCode Description
1. NameThe name of the water feature. The original dataset uses capital letters. The names were converted to Title Case for map display purposes.
2. St_OrderAlias: Stream Order
The Strahler Stream Order was defined by the Terrain look up table supplied with the Environmental Stream Attributes.
A waterway with no tributaries is a first-order stream. Two first-order streams join to form a second-order stream and two second-order streams join to form a third-order stream and so on. The Northern Territory government uses a simple 3 tiered description for the 7 stream orders.
1, 2Northern Territory Government Land Clearing Guidelines refer to Stream Orders 1 and 2 as "Intermittent Streams".
3, 4Northern Territory Government Land Clearing Guidelines refer to Stream Orders 3 and 4 as "Creeks".
5, 6, 7Northern Territory Government Land Clearing Guidelines refer to Stream Orders 1 and 2 as "Rivers".
3. HierarchyDescribes the importance of the associated water feature. Each stream segment is described as either Major, Minor or Not Applicable.
4. PerennialEach stream segment is described as either Perennial, Non Perennial or Not Applicable.
5. SegmentNoThe Segment Number is a unique identifier for each stream segment and was used to join the Stream Network to the Terrain Look up table.
