This spatial dataset describes the Keep Plains area in the western part of the Northern Territory immediately adjacent to the Western Australia border. The surveyed area of 253km2 is located approximately 350km south west of the Katherine township over the Spirit Hills Pastoral lease; and 50km north east of the Kununurra township. Department survey code KPLAIN_25.
The original land unit mapping survey undertaken in 1971 covered both the Lower Weaber Plains in Western Australian and also the Keep Plains in the Northern Territory. The spatial dataset covers the Northern Territory part of the survey. Approximately 300 soil-landscape and vegetation descriptions form the basis for describing the land units at a survey scale of 1:25 000. The associated technical report also describes the potential for irrigation in the area.
The line-work for this spatial dataset was re-digitised in November 2018 (see Lineage) and a new map product was created (see Supplementary Information).

Data Quality
Lineage:Original map unit boundaries delineated from aerial photographs and stereoscope interpretation. Map units transferred to clean dyeline sheets or topographic maps via a mapograph. Original maps were hardcopy only. With the advent of geographic information systems polygons were digitised by rectifying the original hard copy maps.
Map unit boundaries derived using hard copy aerial photography and stereoscope, satellite imagery (post 1993), geological and topographic maps. Field data (site data) described and classified according to national standards at the time of capture.
CORE ATTRIBUTES ADDED IN 2013: The department's set of core landform, soil and vegetation attributes attached to map units.
SPATIAL LINE-WORK UPDATED NOVEMBER 2018: Line-work was re-digitised using the following methods;
- Scanning of the original historic aerial photographs that contained all of the original lines drawn by Aldrick (pencil) and the site locations (pin prick).
- Georeferenced the scanned photographs in ArcMap against photo-patterns of 2012 30cm pixel imagery, with several control points of reference until it was suitably georeferenced and the photographs also somewhat aligned with each other.
- Created new Map Unit lines in ArcMap by tracing the original (pencil) linework.
- Adjusted the boundary slightly in ArcMap i.e. removed unmapped areas and realigned the eastern boundary with the 2012 imagery of Sandy Creek (it appeared that slight migration of creek had occurred over the last 40 years). The original published map does not have a hard boundary in some areas so there was some 'scientific licence' required.
- Updated the site point location georeferences in a shapefile and updated the department's soil information details.
Positional Accuracy:Polygon Data: Hardcopy maps rectified using control points marked on original hardcopy maps. Control points include creek lines, cadastre and other topographic features. Depending on the nature of the landscape (the number of control points) positional accuracy may vary. Positional accuracy generally considered moderate.
Point Data: Survey teams navigated during field operations with topographic maps, aerial photographs and prismatic compass. Point source locations marked on aerial photography in the field. Positional accuracy considered within 300m but generally below 200m depending on the terrain. Site coordinates derived by transferring site locations from aerial photographs to topographic maps and coordinates calculated.
Attribute Accuracy:Attributes assigned according to the dominant feature. For example, where ten sites have been grouped to describe a particular map unit and two different soils described from these sites then the dominant soil is chosen.
Department core attributes added in 2013: The department's set of core landform, soil and vegetation attributes attached to map units.
Logical Consistency:GIS editing tools were used to rectify all overshoots and undershoots in line work. Polygon topology rules applied are; must not overlap, must not have gaps and each polygon has only one label.
