Title: Estimated Level of Use - Darwin Rural Groundwater Resources
Citation Date:2025-02-07
Date Type:creation
Custodian:Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security
Description
The spatial dataset describes the estimated use of groundwater resources within the Darwin Rural Water Control District. Users should refer to the date that the estimated level of use was generated.
A desktop assessment describes an estimated level of use for each groundwater resource (management) zone. This supports investigations for a better understanding of the use of groundwater, in particular, the groundwater resource zones that do not have a current management plan. The data is intended to clarify the department's position in relation to water availability in the 12 groundwater resource zones in the Darwin Rural Water Control District and Palmerston Municipal area. It does not include consideration of surface water resources in these areas.

Lineage:Refer to dataset Groundwater Resource Zones Darwin Rural Area - metadata: www.ntlis.nt.gov.au/metadata/export_data?type=html&metadata_id=2D8322F6959FFA83E0632144CD9B8D6F
30 August 2017. Darwin Rural Water Control District and Palmerston: A total of 138 groundwater resource zones were created and grouped into 11 groundwater systems. The data compilation process is described in the report, Woltmann 2017, Chapter 7, Assessment methodology. The estimated use was not displayed in the original dataset.
1 December 2020. Darwin Rural Water Control District and Palmerston: The number of groundwater resource zones were reduced to 112 to consolidate smaller zones within the same groundwater system. The grouping into 11 groundwater systems remain. The process to establish the estimated level of use for each zone was reassessed. The methodology is described in the report, Miles 2020, Appendix A. Refer to supplementary details in this metadata record.
7 Februrary 2025. Darwin Rural Water Control District: The number of groundwater resource zones was further reduced to 12 consolidated areas within the Darwin Rural Water Control District. The data compilation process is described in the report, Tickell et al., 2023. The process to establish the estimated level of use for each zone was completed using the methodology described in Water Resources Division Technical Report (2/2021) Status of groundwater resources in the Darwin Rural Water Control District and Palmerston Municipality (Miles, 2020).
Positional Accuracy:The spatial datasets used to create the groundwater resource zones are varied in scale, ranging from 1:100 000 to 1:250 000
Attribute Accuracy:Each polygon has been assigned a range of attributes described in the Data Dictionary in this metadata record. The estimated water use categories for each groundwater resource zone are described as:
- Over Allocation (>100% use)
- High (90-100% use)
- Medium (50-90% use)
- Low (<50% use)
The dataset displayed in NR Maps only shows the final estimated use category level and the date it was generated.
Users should refer to the Estimated Use Date.
The calculations used to create the Estimated Use categories are displayed for Northern Territory Government use only.
Refer to the report Status of groundwater resources in the Darwin Rural Water Control District and Palmerston municipality (Miles M. 2020) to review methodology for calculating estimated use in each groundwater zone. The methodology used to generate the calculation is described in Appendix 1. The values described within each groundwater resource zone include the Total area of Aboriginal Land Parcels (Ha), Count of Aboriginal Land parcels, Aboriginal Land Parcel area percent total WMZ area, parcel count (less than or great than 5000m2), Stock and Domestic Use (ML), Recharge (ML), Consumptive Pool (ML), licensed bores count, Licensed Volume (ML), and Total Use (%).
Logical Consistency:The spatial data polygons in this dataset are multi-part.
7 February 2025 - There are 12 groundwater resource zones that were created for the Darwin Rural Water Control District.
Completeness:Users should refer to the Estimated Use date.

The calculated annual recharge in each WMZ area.Area_Ha Alias: Area (Ha)
This is the area of the WMZ calculated in hectares.Classifica Alias: Classification
The level of use within each WMZ categorised according to the level of use for licensed and unlicensed use. The level of use determines capacity for future groundwater dependent development within each zone.
A desktop exercise was undertaken to assign an estimated level of use for each groundwater resource zone.
Users should refer to the date that the estimated use was generated.
If this data is displayed on a static map product, the USE DATE should be displayed / refereced.High (90-100% use) Level of use is approaching full allocation. Contact the Department for further information before submitting and application. Low (<50% use) The Department is currently accepting applications for this resource. Contact Water Resources for further information. Medium (50-90% use) The Department is currently accepting applications for this resource. Contact Water Resources for further information. Over Allocated (>100% use) Any development that results in an increase in the number of land titles and therefore an increase in the number of statutory rights to access groundwater will not be supported by this Department. Consumptiv Alias: Consumptive Pool (ML)
The estimated consumptive pool calculated for each WMZ (megalitres).WAP Water Allocation Plan area.
