Title: Alice Springs Flood Investigation and Floodplain Mapping Study

Description
The aim of the study is to develop a 2 dimensional flood model, which allows flood flow in a complex flood plain to be modelled, to determine the extent and severity of riverine flooding in the town of Alice Springs and the Alice Springs rural area south of Heavitree Gap. The purpose of the study is to produce floodplain maps of the Alice Springs and its rural area for land use planning and counter disaster purposes. This study is an extension of the Alice Springs Farms Area Floodplain Mapping Study (WRM, 2006), undertaken by WRM on behalf of the Department of Planning & Infrastructure in 2006 in order to develop detailed Todd River floodplain maps for the rural area south of Alice Springs.
The 1:10,000 scale datasets details the extent and severity of flooding in the modeled area for the Q100, Q50, Q20 and PMF flood event, mapping the peak flood surface contours, flood and floodway extent derived from hydrological modelling using topographical mapping and hydrological flood/flow datasets. The mapping dataset is displayed over a topographic/cadastral base and provides a basis for identifying the extent and distribution of peak floodwater levels for the Alice Springs town and rural area.

Data Quality
Lineage:The study was carried out by WRM (engineering consultant) in consultation with the Water Resources Division of DLRM using topographic information, hydro flood/flow datasets, hydrological modelling and field investigations.
The Q100 flood datasets consisting of the flood extent, floodway, floodway areas and flood surface contours) were completed in September 2015. The flood extent fringe was added in September 2015.
The Q50, Q20 and PMF datasets were completed in June 2012 with modification to the PMF floodway data in November 2015.
Positional Accuracy:Good - Derived from topographic base map and NT cadastre. The summation of errors from all sources results in data with a standard deviation defined by scale used as +-25m for well-defined points.
Attribute Accuracy:The accuracy of the attribute information is considered reasonable and conforms to guidelines as per 'Floodplain Management in Australian - Best Practice Principles and Guidelines'. Agriculture and Resource Management Council of Australia and New Zealand. SCARM Report 73 (2000).
Logical Consistency:GIS editing tools were used to rectify all overshoots and undershoots in line work. Polygon data topology rules applied are must not overlap, must not have gaps and each polygon has only one label.
Completeness:Complete
