History/Origin | Willes Road is named in commemoration of Michael Vicary Willes (1911-1981), Returned Soldier, Public Servant. Willes having served as Bombardier during the war arrived in Darwin with his new bride Rosalind in April 1948 to work as a Government accounts clerk. They stayed at the Vic Hotel, before moving into an empty disused hut at the entrance to Vesteys Meat Works and adjacent to the railway. Not happy with his desk job, Willes took a job as a supervisor at Berrimah Farm. Michael and Rosalind Willes took up Agricultural Lease 517 at Berrimah, from 1955 until surrendered in 1973. |
