History/Origin | Named after William and John Bartley Thorngate of Gosport, Hampshire, England who with Emmanuel Churcher applied for a land in the Northern Territory in 1864 as a result of the South Australian colonisation of the Territory. William and John Thorngate died in 1867 and 1868 respectively and Emmanuel Churcher in 1887, and as a result of a 1889 court decision the applications passed to WE Churcher who was subsequently issued title to a large tract of land in Palmerston (now Darwin) and the surrounding Hundred of Bagot. |
