History/Origin | Named after Pastor W F and Mrs Schwarz. Pastor Schwarz, together with Pastor F A H Kempe was a pioneer of early Hermannsburg. As young Lutheran Missionaries they left Bethany, S A, for Hermannsburg in 1875 and after a terrible journey arrived in 1877. Both Mrs Kempe and Mrs Schwarz came in 1878. The Schwarz family left Hermannsburg for SA on 19 September 1889 after 12 years' service. Originally gazetted in NTG16 17/4/57 as Schwartz. However, after further investigation and with confirmation from Mrs Dorothy Kleinig, Pastor and Mrs Schwarz's daughter, and from old Hermannsburg records that the correct spelling was SCHWARZ, without a T, the name was corrected to Schwarz (vide NTG46 04/10/61). |
