History/Origin |
Named after John Maconochie who at time of his death in a car accident in Somalia (UN Agency) had been the longest serving Botanist in the NT, employed continuously at Alice Springs from 1967 to 1984. He represented the Territory herbaria on the Council of Heads of Australian Herbaria for many years and was the Australian Botanical Liaison Officer at Kew, England in 1976-77. Although his primary training had been in plant physiology and ecology, John Maconochie maintained a broad base when he joined the herbarium working in taxonomy (Acacia, Fabaceae, Trachymene, Cycas) as well as various aspects of desert ecology and range management. |
