History/Origin | Named after Captain Allison (Al) W. Strauss, US Air Corps. In a major engagement over Darwin on 27 April 1942, Captain Strauss was shot down while leading a combat flight against enemy planes. He died when his plane crashed at Swires Bluff on the southern shore of Darwin Harbour. Captain Strauss was posthumously awarded the 'Silver Star' for gallantry in action over Darwin, Northern Territory. |
