History/Origin | Named after Douglas Joseph Wilson. Often called Doug or Dougie, Doug Wilson and his wife Daphne built the Daly Waters store in 1956 and ran the business until it was sold in 1974. Both Doug and Daphne were horse lovers and racing enthusiasts. Using the store as their base, Doug attended bush race meetings, always enjoying wins and places. Doug was heavily involved with the Daly Waters Race Club (of which he was President), the Katherine Race Club and the Darwin Race Club. In 1965 Doug, then President of the Daly Waters Race Club, rode Kevin Patterson's horse Geronimo, to win the Daly Waters Cup. In 1950 he rode Bullet, owned by Massey Hood, to win the Mayfair Ladies Bracelet and the Katherine Jubilee Cup in Katherine. In 1969 he did well with several wins and places in the Katherine Amateur Race Club's annual meeting. Described as a 'super horseman', Doug trained, did track work and rode for many owners, most of whom, like Doug, have now passed away. He was well-respected by the racing fraternity and enjoyed a good reputation for being an honest jockey. A small, slightly built man, his body never lost its 'jockey look' and in his retirement years he could always be found around the stables and the race track of the Darwin Turf Club. He died and was buried in Darwin in September 2006. |
