History/Origin | Named after Malcolm (Mal) Clive Hunnam (1943 - 2015). Born in Sydney, Mal's career focus was initially in buildings before he moved into roads. An employment opportunity took him to Papua New Guinea in 1969. While he was there he met and married his wife Lena. In the early 1990s they moved to the Town of Katherine where they started a family having seven children. Mal worked for the Australian and Northern Territory Governments for around 40 years. He was based in Katherine for 24 years and was involved in the construction of significant infrastructure projects in the region, including the Bradshaw River, McArthur River and Victoria River bridges. In 2010 he received a Chief Ministers Award for his achievements. He was 72 years of age when he passed away in Brisbane on the 28 December 2015, after suffering a long illness. On 22 April 2016 a memorial and plaque in Mal's honour were unveiled by the Department of Infrastructure in Katherine. |
