History/Origin |
Named after Trevor James 'Wingy' Cormack (1950 - 1995). Trevor Cormack was born in Quorn SA in 1950. He started work in construction and life in the NT at the age of 16. His work ethics were beyond the call of duty. During the 1980s, Trevor was on a grader preparing the foundations for the current (2015) Government Centre in First Street, Katherine, three days after having his foot squashed and one toe cut off. He was predominately a grader operator, but could drive any machine or truck. This was remarkable as he had contacted polio as a child and only had the use of his right arm, hence the nickname "Wingy". His expertise as an operator, was utilised on various civil construction projects in the NT including RAAF Base Tindal, Victoria Highway dual lane upgrade, Bing Bong port haul road, Mount Todd and the Merlin Mine. Trevor worked as along as possible while suffering terminal illness but he finally succumbed at age 45. He passed away in Port Augusta Hospital on the 11 August 1995. |
