History/Origin |
Named after Neil David Anderson, who worked as a mechanic for private workshops in Alice Springs then joined the Public Sector as a Vehicle Inspector for Motor Vehicle Registry (MVR) in 1990. He subsequently became Supervising Transport Inspector Southern Region during his nine year tenure with MVR. He was an active member in motorsports in the Central Australian region, being a member and competitor of Arunga Park Speedway, Central Australian Sporting Car Association and Central Australian Drag Racing Association. Neil also competed in and worked as an official for the Finke Desert Race. Most notable was his construction of off-road competition vehicles with Aboriginal prisoners. He transferred to the Northern Territory Correctional Services in 1999 as Chief Industry Officer of the Mechanical Workshop. He was responsible for maintenance of prison equipment, utilising prisoners as well as providing training opportunities. He developed training programs within the automotive sector and delivered these to the prisoners with great success. Neil provided an invaluable contribution to the Northern Territory Department of Correctional Services through his insight and innovation and was a well-respected member of staff at the Centre, as well as being highly respected by the prisoners he worked with. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2004 but continued to work for Correctional Services until his death in December 2006. |
