History/Origin | Named after Sister Gemma McCullagh, a Daughter of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. In 1938 Sister Gemma was the founding principal of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (OLSH) Secondary School in Alice Springs. Between 1943 and 1959 she moved between Alice Springs and St Joseph's Darwin High School as a teacher and teaching principal. Between 1960 and 1967 she was Australian Leader of the Sisters, and then she served a further three years on the Sisters? Administration team. In 1969 she taught at St Paul?s Primary School Nightcliff and then returned to Alice Springs for a further three years as Principal of OLSH Primary School. Following Cyclone Tracy she also taught for three years at St Mary's Darwin and in 1980 spent a year at Garden Point Mission on Melville Island, followed by nine years at Daly River. In 1980 she was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire for her service to education in the Northern Territory.
