History/Origin |
Named after Father John Peter Leary whose first appointment in 1953 was to Garden Point Mission, Melville Island. In subsequent years, Father Leary founded a new mission centre on the Daly River, establishing a health clinic and school for the aboriginal stockmen working on surrounding cattle stations. He later helped establish the "Daly River Aborginal Pastoral Training Centre" and worked in Wadeye and Darwin. In 1990, Father Leary was appointed Vicar for the Aboriginal People. |
