History/Origin | Named in commemoration of William (Bill) John Jelley (1924 - 2006) who was a member of the British Navy in 1941. He arrived in Darwin with his family in 1962, where he worked for the Department of Water Supply within the Commonwealth Government. He was a Founding Member of the Dinah Beach Cruising Yacht Association, a Founding Member and Life Member of the Cruising Yacht Association of the NT and a Foundation Member, a Life Member and a past Vice Commodore of the Darwin Sailing Club. He was also heavily involved with Darwin International Yacht Races, including Darwin to Dili and Darwin to Ambon races. Bill passed away in July 2006 at the age of 81. He was brought across from Mandorah to Darwin by boat for his final sail. |
