History/Origin | After Brother Andrew Smith who was born in 1901. He was skipper of the Mission boat at Garden Point Mission, Melville Island. During WWII most small craft in Darwin were commandeered by the Navy. Bishop Gsell volunteered the use of the Mission boat, St Francis, to the Navy with the proviso that Brother Andrew Smith (ex Royal Australian Navy Chief Petty Officer) remain the Skipper. This meant that brother Andrew was called back to his old rank of Chief Petty Officer. He was later promoted to Lieutenant. The theme, Top End Catholic Priests and Religious, was selected through consultation with Larrakia Development Corporation. |
