History/Origin | Named after Father John Leary, whose first appointment in 1953 was to Garden Point Mission, Melville Island. In subsequent years, Father Leary founded a new mission centre on the Daly River and worked in Wadeye and Darwin. In 1990, Father Leary was appointed Vicar for the Aboriginal People. In 2000, Father Leary was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (OAM) "for services to the spiritual, educational and health needs of the Aboriginal people of the Northern Territory as priest and missionary of the Catholic Church". The theme, Top End Catholic Priests and Religious, was selected through consultation with Larrakia Development Corporation. |
