History/Origin | After HMAS Hobart (II), a Perth class guided missile armed destroyer of 4,600 tons, commissioned in 1965. On 26 December 1974, the day after Darwin was devastated by Cyclone Tracy, Hobart's crew were recalled from Christmas leave and she sailed from Sydney on 27 December 1974, carrying vital supplies to assist in what became known as Operation NAVY HELP DARWIN. Arriving in Darwin on 3 January 1975, her crew were immediately involved with clearing and salvage operations. She remained in the Darwin area until 18 January 1975.
