History/Origin |
Named in commemoration of Squadron Leader Andrew David Swan MBE, (b. 1896 in Perth, Scotland) who was station adjutant of RAAF base Darwin on 19 February 1942 and who, during the first air raid that day, manned a Lewis gun firing constantly at the strafing planes. When the first raid ended Swan and others broke open the blazing ammunition store and carried explosives to safety. Following the second raid it is Swan who is reported to have passed the verbal order from the Base's Wing Commander Griffith to evacuate the Base on to subordinate ranks. |
