Wood Crescent is named in commemoration of Mounted Constable Alexander Grey (Gray) Wood who joined the South Australian Police Force on 1 May 1880 then transferred to the Northern Territory three months later on 1 August 1880 as a 3/C Mounted Constable serving in the Top End. Mounted Constable Wood was serving at Yam Creek (The Shackle) a gold mining area north of Pine Creek when he died on 9 June 1881 after being stricken by sickness and diarrhoea, aged 27 years. |
