History/Origin | This County, in the Pine Creek area, lapsed with the passage in 1976 and assent of the Crown Lands Ordinance 1976 (No 1 of 1977) and the Crown Lands (Validation of Proclamations) Ordinance 1976 (No.2 of 1977). The County was named after Archibald Philip Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery (1847 - 1929) who was born in London and was educated in Eton and Oxford. He became a member of the Gladstone Ministry in 1880. Lord Rosebery came to Australia in 1883 and whilst in Darwin purchased land in the Town of Palmerston and in the Hundred of Bray, across the Harbour. He returned to Great Britain and in 1892 became Foreign Secretary under Gladstone and Prime Minister when Gladstone resigned in 1894. He was Prime Minister of the Liberal Party from 1894 to 1895. |
