History/Origin Probably named by John McDouall Stuart, when he reached the coast in July 1862 after successfully crossing the Australian Continent from south to north.

Stuart makes no mention of naming the bay to the east of where his party reached the coast, however the name is shown on the map accompanying Stuart's journal.

Finke Bay is believed to be named after Stuart's friend William Finke, Esq. of Adelaide, South Australia.
