History/Origin | Named after the former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam whose Government, in 1975, handed over to the Gurindji people the Daruraru Land trust - being the first land in Australia "handed back" to the traditional Aboriginal owners. The Hon Edward Gough Whitlam AC QC (b. 1916 -) Navigator, Barrister and Politician. In December 1941 Whitlam applied to join the Royal Australian Air Force and served in norther Australia, ending his service as a Flight Lieutenant. After serving with the RAAF he joined the Australian Labor Party in 1945. in 1952 he became the member for Werriwa in Sydney's south, retaining that seat in eleven more federal elections over the next 25 years until 1978. Whitlam was Prime Minister from 5/12/1972 to 11/11/1975. |
